The Thrashers have no excuse now
This team is no longer a laughable expansion franchise...
Things look bleak right now for the Atlanta Thrashers who entered the season as possibly one of the league's contending teams.
They added names such as Peter Bondra, Bobby Holik, acquired Marian Hossa and Greg de Vries and Kari Lehtonen was to follow up on his strong 2004 ending.
Ilja Kovalchuk, Marc Savard will carry the team, Scott Mellanby will lead them in the dressing room.
That didn't happen.
The Thrashers started off well, competing with the Hurricanes for the division lead.
Unfortunately, they couldn't keep up with them, the Thrashers were very streaky, were usually on hot and cold slumps (more cold).
They now sit 9th in the Eastern Conference, 4 points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 8th and final playoff spot.
Their hopes are now seriously in jeopardy and it is possible they will not make the playoffs.
Their schedule is favorable, two games against the mediocre Capitals and one against the slumping Bruins.
We don't know what to expect in the new NHL, anything can happen, but this looks very unlikely.
They have no excuse this time.
They have a great team on paper, but on the ice...that's another story.

Wrong - they didn't start off well, competing with Carolina for the lead. Their October was horrendous, marred by goalie injuries.
Wrong - They are only 4 points back, with a game in hand.
Wrong - It is possible they will make the playoffs.
